The Olivia Times. March 18, 1920

Facebook Without Photos  News from 100 years ago  James Topka, a young man  employed at the tile factory, met  with quite a serious injury  Monday forenoon in which he  received a broken arm and sever  bruises and cuts. He was oiling a  machine when he was caught on  the shafting and badly hurt.  The latest news of next summer’s  styles in skirts sounds more  like scandal than a fashion note.  In Persia, a girl doesn’t see her  husband before she marries him.  In the U.S. it’s about the only  time she sees him.  Will someone tell us why the  flu passes up the girl with silk  stockings and grabs the man who  wears a couple of suits of underwear?  Tony Conroy, who played on  the Olivia baseball team the past  two seasons has won the envied  distinction in athletic circles of  being picked as a member of the  American hockey team to compete  in the Olympic games at  Antwerp this year. Mr Conroy is  one of the best all round athletes  the northwest has every produced.

There is likely to be a great deal of smut among wheat, oats  and barley this year unless farmers  take the precaution to treat  their seed with formaldehyde,  says E.C. Stakman of the experiment  station.  Quite a delegation of Morton’s  leading citizens were in town last  Thursday on basketball matters.  Morton has a real team of high  school players this year and the  citizens there are justly proud of  their showing and loyally backing  them up for the season’s finish.  Monday evening of this week  was an important social date in  Minnesota when all good republicans,  nonpartisans, socialists,  communists and members of all  shades of political thought and  affiliation except the democrats  had an opportunity to hold family  reunions at all voting places.  One of the voters at the republican  caucus in Olivia the other  evening made a cross mark after  the name of every candidate for  president on thier ticket, and the  voter wasn’t a female either.  Olivia is beginning to realize  that it should be an incorporated  city instead of a mere village. Its  strange the fair dame had not  grasped this idea long ago.  .
